80/A Flanger

80A Flanger

IMG 1096

Currently we have only a limited number of pedals available. This is due to the small amount of Vintage Bucket Brigade Devices we have been able to source.

I would also like to acknowledge "Scruffie" for his invaluable assistance and counsel on this and several other PastFx designs.

The 80/A Flanger is based upon a venerable late 70’s, early 80’s discontinued analog flanger pedal famously utilised by numerous musicians, including the likes of master guitarists Pat Travers and Paul Gilbert. It uses an obsolete high voltage 512 stage Bucket Brigade Device with  extra features and functions all in a small Pedal Board Friendly sized enclosure.

From subtle modulation, to soaring jet woosh, to metallic clang and out-of-this-world warble, and everything in between– the 80/A delivers a vintage-correct reimagining and expansion of the original from which it was inspired.

The pedal is capable of a very broad range in terms of LFO/Speed rate (up to approximately 30 sec), and delay time (0.39ms-14ms)

Furthermore, the 80/A includes a very useful blend control, which allows the wet modulated signal to be reduced allowing a more subtle effect. New Red and Blue LFO rate indicators now allow a visual confirmation of the speed of the effect.

Controls:

Manual - controls the fixed delay time of the effect. (When a stereo cable is inserted into the Control jack, the manual control will no longer function.)

Range - controls whether the speed control (automatic) or Manual control (fixed) controls the Delay time. FCW = 100% speed control. FCCW = Fixed (Matrix style) 12 oclock is a blend of both

Speed – controls the automatic rate of the LFO (visually displayed via Blue/Red LED)

Blend – New control which restricts the amount of modulated / wet signal mixing with the dry signal. Fully Clockwise is stock setting.(reducing the blend does not reduce the feedback)

Threshold - controls the sensitivity of the Noise Gate circuit which is determined by the intensity of the instruments attack. Fully clockwise minimises this feature. With careful CCW adjustment, the Threshold control can allow an envelope style flange occurring pending the attack and amplitude of the signal fed.

Enhance - Also known as color/feedback/regen, controls the amount of signal regenerated back into the front end of the circuit. This allows the flanger to create a more intense effect.

Level – Allows for output volume adjustment of overall effect

Harmonics – Blue LED = Negative Feedback (hollow tubular sound), Red LED = Positive feedback (fuller sound)

Control - expression pedal jack allowing the Manual control to be controlled externally using a 10K – 100K potentiometer.

(Ring - Pot pin 1, Sleeve - Pot pin 2, Tip - Pot pin 3)

Technical Specs:

  • Matsushita / Panasonic 512-stage Bucket Brigade Device
  • Does NOT use  low voltage BBD Chip, resulting in higher headroom when the effect is engaged
  • True bypass operation
  • 18V DC centre negative power supply requirements; no battery option available
  • Dimensions: 112 x 60 x 31mm / 4.4" x 2.36" x 1.22" (enclosure only)
  • Current draw: 35 mA
  • There are no internal adjustable trimpots. Changing their position will result in a non functioning pedal.
  • Please only use high quality 18VDC regulated power supply with Boss style Negative tip.
  • Cheap switchmode power supplies, will guarantee noise issues and performance issues!

We recommend but not limited to:
• Voodoo Lab Pedal Power ® 2 Plus etc.
• Cioks DC7/4/8/10/SOL.
• Walrus Audio Phoenix.
• T-Rex® Chameleon Fuel Tank
• Truetone 1 Spot PRO CS7/12 only
• Gigrig Generator
• Eventide PowerMax / Mini
• Strymon Zuma/Zuma R300/Ojai R30
• Donner® DP-4 ISO 8 PLUS
• Fender Engine Room LVL8 / LVL12
• Mosky®C8 Power Station

• Dunlop ECB004 18VDC*
PLEASE NOTE: * Dunlop ECB004 18VDC is an economical switchmode power supply that may work however,
in a complex pedal board setup switchmode supply noise may occur.
It is recommended to use a high quality power supply (see above) to avoid such issues.

 MN3007 Mini

What is it?

The PastFx Chorus Ensemble MN3007 Mini (CE-7 Mini)  is a modified PastFx Chorus Ensemble Mini ,using the less obsolete NOS MN3007 BBD.

The CE-7 Mini uses the same PCB as the Mini, is almost identical with components and is attractively priced.

The CE-7 Mini operates off the same bipolar voltages, the exact same preamp section, and incorporates both switchable Buffer Mod and built in Depth Mod.

Features

  • Uses obsolete NOS Panasonic / Matsushita 1024 stage BBD MN3007
  • incorporates the “Noise Killer” circuitry
  • Same unique Preamp stage
  • Normal / effect footswitch
  • Vibrato / Chorus toggle switch
  • Triangle Wave LFO – Chorus
  • Sinewave LFO - Vibrato
  • Not True Bypass (Jfet switching as original )
  • Red LED Peak Level Indicator visual feedback of input sensitivity
  • High / Low Input sensitivity changeover switch
  • Blue LFO rate LED, visual indication of LFO Rate
  • Stereo/ Mono Outputs. In a Stereo setup, wet signal is directed to the Stereo jack and Dry to the Mono output jack.
  • Vibrato controls are Depth & Rate
  • Chorus is controlled by Intensity knob & Depth (Built in Depth Mod)
  • When effect is bypassed the LFO LED indicator remains on without flashing
  • Pedalboard friendly, uses minimal real estate and operates off industry standard (9VDC negative tip )
  • The CE7- Mini also incorporates up to 2 extra popular modifications that many owners of the original unit would use.
  • Depth Mod

    • This mod is popular for those who were wanting more control over their chorus effect.
    • The Vibrato Depth knob now controls the Depth of both the Chorus & Vibrato. The Stock depth setting of the Chorus can still be achieved by turning the Vibrato Depth knob fully clockwise.

    Buffer Mod

    • Many owners of the original noticed that when selecting the high on the input sensitivity switch that some of the high frequencies of their signal was lost. This was a desirable outcome for some. To remedy this, some users would place a buffer before the BOSS® CE-1 to restore the high frequencies. The CE7 - Mini comes with an inbuilt buffer circuit which can be added or removed as desired.
    • Note: When clipping the signal heavily by having the Level control on high, it can give various responses based on what type of amp is being played through.
    • On some amps it can almost sound like a fuzz, and on others a more traditional crunch sound! This is the same experience with the original.

Dimensions : 112 x 60 x 53mm (1590B style enclosure)

Current draw approx : 110-130MA

MN3007 Mini

What is it?

The PastFx TD-Y is a faithful reproduction of the now discontinued Buffalo FX TD-X Equaliser and Gain Booster pedal, which itself was inspired by a popular valve-powered overdrive favoured by several notable rock artists during the 1980s and ‘90s. The TD-Y has been produced in a smaller, pedalboard-friendly enclosure, and made with the same careful attention to detail and high-quality components as the pedal upon which it is based. It is a highly tweakable and useful tone sculpting tool that can be set to act as a potent equaliser, a clean or dirty boost, or as a satisfyingly rich and complex overdrive. There is plenty of headroom on tap to allow players to generate great tones from the pedal alone or by using it to push their amplifiers over the top. The PastFx TD-Y can go from beautiful, blooming low gain creaminess all the way up to medium gain distortion and early British amp characteristics, especially working in tandem with an amplifier’s character and playing environment.

Specs:

  • Controls for Gain, Level, Bass, Mids and Treble to shape the sonic character of the effect.
  • True bypass operation.
  •  New external 3 way toggle switch to select symmetrical  V1 (factory default) or new V2 clipping option

and a middle position, which removes diode clipping, resulting in less compression and a slight volume boost.

  • New Push Button switch. When depressed, the mids control is removed from the pedal and the circuit returns to the original V1 4 knob design.
  • Dimmable LED, internally adjustable.
  • Requires a 9vDC centre negative tip power supply, drawing only 5.5 mA current.
  • Dimensions: 112 x 60 x 31mm / 4.4" x 2.36" x 1.22" (enclosure only)
  • Input impedance: 1 MΩ
  • Neutrik Instrument jacks, with audiophile grade parts sourced from MMK, Wima, Epcos, Vishay, Panasonic, Nichicon, etc., just like its predecessor.

Review

Hi, Verlie, I got the TD-Y v2 today! I love this pedal! It really can sound like a BK TD, but holy crap it's WAY more versatile. I was expecting the TD-Y to kinda just stay in the range of the Boss BD-2 and the BK TD, and it does both of those nicely, and without the fizz/sizzle. But it goes well beyond the scope of those pedals, and does so in an extremely nice, organic sounding way, both clean or driven. Initially, I assumed the TD-Y was ultimately a "clone" of the Butler pedal, so I adjusted the knobs as I would on a BK TD. Bad idea. The TD-Y's controls work quite differently, and the "MIDS" knob is genius. That's the money knob for sure. I just got the pedal, so I can't say which switch position, v1 or v2, I like better. Also, it was nice to be able to remove the 1970's school lunchbox sized BK TD from my board and replace it with a normal sized pedal....and no more dedicated power cord. Bottom line is the TD-Y v2 is a very versatile pedal. You've done a great job with it!

-Michael
