 PFX 19 UV Canberra Overdrive

What Is It?

The PastFx Canberra is a faithful reproduction of the Buffalo FX Carrera overdrive. Named after the Australian capital, the Canberra overdrive is our lowest-gain offering within the Spectrum Collection. The pedal excels as a clean to mildly crunchy drive, boost, and all-around tone shaper, favorably articulating low and midrange frequencies to provide warmth and presence even when playing clean or with the gain set to the edge of breakup. When cranked, the Canberra can even exhibit boosting characteristics popularly associated with the mythical Horse-themed overdrive of pedal lore. The key element of the pedal is how it “feels” while playing; notes are smooth, dynamic, and enriched with slight texture as the user adjusts the controls. A perfect foundational overdrive for stacking layers of dirt or as a tastefully blended low gainer and boost on its own.

Specs:

  • Controls for Gain, Level, Bass, and Treble to shape the sonic character of the effect
  • True bypass operation

  • Input impedance: 1 MΩ

PFX 16 UV Power Booster

What is it?

The PastFx 18V Power Booster is a pedalboard-friendly recreation and expansion of the Buffalo FX Power Booster. Based on the legendary Colorsound Power Booster, one of the first overdrive effects pedals made available to the masses, the effect was popularised in the 1970s and unmistakably imprinted on the recordings of various classic rock guitar legends during the era. With the inclusion of a dedicated master volume, external gain control, and adjustable internal gain switch, the PastFx 18V Power Booster is a versatile little dirt box capable of light tonal grit, hair-raising overdrive, light to medium fuzz, and/or clean to gloriously filthy boost, with bass and treble controls for further tone shaping. The pedal tastefully colours the player’s tone without ever truly overtaking it, dialed to taste and adding new dimensions to a variety of rhythm or lead guitar applications. Runs on 9 to18v DC, with 18 volts allowing slightly more gain.

Specs:

  • Controls for Gain, Level, Bass, Mild and Treble to shape the sonic character of the effect
  • True bypass operation
  • New external switch to select “Hot” (factory default) or “Mild” gain headroom (Now external switch)
  • New Mild control - only active when In mild switch mode. This control allows adjustable lower gain levels to taste. Interacts with the Gain control
  • Dimmable LED, internally adjustable with hex tool
  • Requires a 9-18vDC centre negative tip power supply.
  • Dimensions: 112 x 60 x 31mm / 4.4" x 2.36" x 1.22" (enclosure only)
  • Input impedance: 1 MΩ
  • BC169 and BC184 transistors
  • Current draw @ 9V = 5mA / 18V = 10mA

PFX 15 UV Revolution Rev 39

What Is It?

The PastFx Revolution is a faithful recreation and expansion of the Buffalo FX Evolution four-stage overdrive and distortion, an effect originally inspired by the Pete Cornish G-2 distortion pedal. Voiced with a slightly dark disposition, the Revolution broods with Plexi tinged angst and is capable of producing tones that span from crunchy overdrive and biting distortion to searing lead runs smeared with shades of muffy wooliness. Although plenty of grit and saturation can be dialed in, there is ample room to tame the beast or simply fine-tune its tonal character to accommodate any rig and various sonic applications. Throughout the sweep of its medium to heavy gain range the effect remains musical, with a low noise floor. We have upgraded the internal dip switch (now external!) mod that allows users to select between the “Stock” original circuit or “Boost” mode, which accentuates brighter tonal frequencies in the pedal’s response for a more modern sound that really brings the Revolution to the next stage.

Specs:

  • Controls for Level, Drive, Tone, and Contour (upper mids shaping) to sculpt an array of distorted tonescapes
  • True bypass operation
  • New external switch (previously internal) to select “Boost” or “Stock” (original circuit)
  • Dimmable LED, internally adjustable
  • Requires a 9v centre negative power supply, drawing under 10mA current.
  • Dimensions: 112 x 60 x 31mm / 4.4" x 2.36" x 1.22" (enclosure only)
  • Input impedance: 1 MΩ

Spectrum Collection

Any COLOUR You Like...

The PastFx Spectrum Collection is a growing series of pedals specifically dedicated to capturing and celebrating the unmistakable sounds and sonic aura of legendary Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour. With this collection we aim to honour Gilmour’s legacy as a master of tone shaping, especially given his use and manipulation of effects pedals to carve out his musical identity, by recreating the key elements of his sound in high-quality pedalboard-friendly enclosures.

As part of our mission at PastFx, we strive to bring back “pedals from the past” that have become scarce, sorely missed, and/or prohibitively expensive on the used market. Accordingly, to form the backbone of this collection, we have chosen to resurrect the most noteworthy and desirable effects designed by Steve Painter, who often crafted tweaked versions of classic pedals utilised by Gilmour for his company, Buffalo FX, until it folded in April 2020. Shortly after Buffalo FX went out of business we began regularly receiving messages from enthusiastic customers asking if we were a new offshoot of Buffalo FX, and if we could fulfill new orders. While we found it to be a humourous misidentification at first, we eventually realised that Buffalo FX’s unfortunate departure actually made it properly fall under our mission here at PastFx, and the volume of inquiries we received inspired us to make some of their newly hard-to-get and coveted pedals more readily available once again. Our recreations not only faithfully produce the same desirable qualities and use the same high-quality parts as their predecessors; we also offer “mod” options for each pedal within the Spectrum Collection, via internal micro switches, that supply users with the option of checking out our own tweaks and expansions of the original circuits for even greater versatility than the originals.

In addition to several Buffalo FX recreations, the Spectrum Collection will also feature a handful of other pedals modeled after other effects found in the music of Pink Floyd, including chorus, phasers, and univibe, to ensure that a truly Gilmourish palette of dirt and modulation are achievable in stompbox form. All pedals within the collection boast their own unique LED colour (red, orange, yellow, greens, blues, violet, pink, etc.), each representing one part of the spectrum along the way. As such, we invite you to choose “Any Colour You Like” when deciding which pedals are right for you and your own tone journey to the moon and back!
