What is it?

The PastFx Chorus Ensemble Mini (CEM) is based upon the Holy Grail of Chorus pedals, The BOSS® CE-1. First released in 1976 it became famous for lush Chorus and Leslie effect Vibrato.

The CEM is currently the smallest recreation of the The BOSS® CE-1 available. It is approximately 1/4 of the size and weight of an original. At 40yrs of age, original units can develop reliability issues and require capacitor replacement and extensive servicing. Unmodified working originals are becoming harder to find and are expensive. The CEM requires no fuses and is not powered by mains voltage. With today’s advancements in technology, the CEM operates off the same bipolar voltages as The BOSS® CE-1, however it only requires standard 9vdc pedal power supply.

           Features

  • Uses obsolete 512 stage 1970's bucket brigade chip
  • incorporates the “Noise Killer” circuitry
  • Same unique Preamp stage
  • Normal / effect footswitch
  • Vibrato / Chorus toggle switch
  • Triangle Wave LFO – Chorus
  • Sinewave LFO - Vibrato
  • Not True Bypass (Jfet switching as original )
  • Red LED Peak Level Indicator visual feedback of input sensitivity
  • High / Low Input sensitivity changeover switch
  • Blue LFO rate LED, visual indication of LFO Rate
  • Stereo/ Mono Outputs. In a Stereo setup, wet signal is directed to the Stereo jack and Dry to the Mono output jack.
  • Vibrato controls are Depth & Rate
  • Chorus is controlled by Intensity knob (which controls both rate and depth)
  • When effect is bypassed the LFO LED indicator remains on without flashing
  • Pedalboard friendly, uses minimal real estate and operates off industry standard (9VDC negative tip )
  • The CEM also incorporates up to 2 extra popular modifications that many owners of the original unit would use.
  • Depth Mod

    • This mod is popular for those who were wanting more control over their chorus effect.
    • The Vibrato Depth knob now controls the Depth of both the Chorus & Vibrato. The Stock depth setting of the Chorus can still be achieved by turning the Vibrato Depth knob fully clockwise.

    Buffer Mod

    • Many owners of the original noticed that when selecting the high on the input sensitivity switch that some of the high frequencies of their signal was lost. This was a desirable outcome for some. To remedy this, some users would place a buffer before the BOSS® CE-1 to restore the high frequencies. The CED comes with an inbuilt buffer circuit which can be added or removed as desired.
    • Note: When clipping the signal heavily by having the Level control on high, it can give various responses based on what type of amp is being played through.
    • On some amps it can almost sound like a fuzz, and on others a more traditional crunch sound! This is the same experience with the original.

Dimensions : 112 x 60 x 53mm (1590B style enclosure)

Current draw approx : 110-130MA  (Please read user manual for specific powering requirements before purchasing)

daves messageReviews:Hi PastFx,
this is Philipp from Munich. The Preamp just arrived.....

Unfortunately, I'm old and my body doesn't take my job as a hobby football goalkeeper as well anymore. My middle finger capsule is ****... no guitar for me for at least 2 weeks.

But..... I had to test it even with two fingers.
Mate, unbelievable!!! That sound... I was searching for it for 2 years now!! I had a nice silver jubilee setup in my Kemper and the XXXXXXXXX XXX Ce1 crunch in front. I never got it right.

I just replaced the XXXXXXXXX XXX  one with yours and... Magic!! I always thought my ears are just bad and I can't setup the amp correctly. But it is setup exactly as I want it!!
Your pedal is the magic sauce. SOOOOO GOOD!!

Now I need a second wonder for my finger to heal until today evening ;-) can't wait to hit the strings.

Thank you so much PastFx, you and your service are awesome!!

Much love from Munich

  • The CED is the only recreation of the BOSS® CE-1 which also incorporates up to 5 extra popular switchable modifications that many owners of the original unit would use.
  • The mods can all be switched off, restoring to the original circuit or selectively activated by taste. These include:

Depth Mod

  • This mod is popular for those who were wanting more control over their chorus effect.
  • When activated it allows the use of the Vibrato Depth knob to control the Chorus Depth.

Stereo True Bypass Mod (Now comes standard!)

When activated, the Stereo True Bypass mod allows for both outputs to be … you guessed it, True Bypass!

Pot Mod

When activated, changes the default level control potentiometer value from 50K to 500K resistance.

As the Original Ce-1 was designed with keyboards in mind, many guitarists who owned original Ce-1 pedals would replace the 50K pot for a higher value.

All 4 mod switches are located inside back of unit.

Adjust to taste.

Boost 'N' Blend

The switchable Boost ‘N’ Blend mod allows the user to customise the chorus output levels and wet and dry

signal balance. Switching both Wet & Dry slide switches to “MOD'' position allows the 2 white trimpots to be

activated. This will allow an increase or reduction of the overall level of the Wet modulated & Dry

signal. By simply adjusting the trims, it is possible to change the stock wet/dry blend ratio. For those

wanting a “cleaner” chorus, the external level control can be turned down and the two internal boost trims

can increase the overall level to match unity. The opposite can also be achieved, for those wanting to push

the “Preamp Crunch'' hard but retain unity with the True Bypass level. Simply turn the Level control to

maximum and use the internal trimpots to reduce the overall level to match.

Dimensions : 120 x 94 x 50mm (1590BB style enclosure)

Current draw approx : 110-130MA (Please read user manual for specific powering requirements before purchasing)

Below is a small excerpt from a Tone-Talk Video where Dan from "That Pedal Show"

explains the "Pot Mod". This video was the inspiration of adding the mod to our design :)

We also now have the Stereo True Bypass Mod as standard (example in video did not have that feature :) )

Reviews:

"Hi PastFx,

Got the pedal yesterday and I can't believe how fast it arrived. The pedal reached me faster than items I purchase in the US. Outstanding!
Now for the pedal itself. WOW!!!!  I cannot tell you how amazing this chorus pedal is. You have outdone Roland with this one. I have been playing for 45 years and I have been known for my tone and this pedal is absolutely the best ever!. I had the original CE-1 and I know it very well. There was a lot of good and some bad about that pedal and your pedal is all of the good and all of the bad FIXED! plus more good on top.
I am really impressed with your crazy mad skillz! I am so lucky that I just accidentally found you and the pedal. I was not looking for this and just so happened to see a YouTube video that was not what I was looking for. I am so lucky and I hope you are busy as you can be making and shipping these pedals. All the best to you and the company."

  • Great pedal, sounds just like the CE-1. packed it super well and the frequent updates were much appreciated! David's Shop
  • This CE-1 clone is incredible. It has the beautiful darker tone of the CE-1 that I much prefer over other chorus pedals. The build is top notch and the additional options buffer/depth/truebypass are well worth it. Chris 's Gear Depot
  • Best chorus/vibrato I’ve played. Makes everything sound better. Dead silent operation. A perfect pedal. Fast shipping. Great communication. Thank you. soundheads gear
  • really a love watery sounding pedal. I haven't played a real ce1 but it sounds like the ones I've heard. pay attention to the power needs. mine was blank until I changed the power supply
